After your Livescan fingerprinting appointment, track your California DOJ and FBI background check results in real time using the official state portal.
You'll need your ATI number
Your ATI (Applicant Transaction Identifier) number is printed on the receipt you received at our office after your fingerprinting appointment. It's a 10-digit number required to look up your submission. Can't find it? Call us at (510) 319-3654 and we'll help.
How to Check Your Status
Follow these four steps to track your background check through the California DOJ portal.
Find Your ATI Number
Your ATI (Applicant Transaction Identifier) number is printed on the receipt we give you at the time of your Livescan appointment. It is a unique 10-digit number.
Visit the DOJ Status Portal
Go to the California DOJ Applicant Status portal at applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov. Enter your ATI number and date of birth to look up your submission.
Allow Processing Time
Most DOJ results are returned within 3–5 business days. FBI results may take up to 2 weeks. Status updates in real time once the agency processes your prints.
Review Your Results
The portal will show the current status: Received, Processing, or Completed. If completed, your requesting agency will receive the results directly.
What Do the Status Messages Mean?
Received
The DOJ has received your fingerprint submission and it is in the processing queue. No action needed — check back in a few days.
Processing
Your background check is actively being reviewed by the DOJ and/or FBI. Results will be available soon.
Completed
Your background check is complete. Results have been sent directly to your requesting agency (employer, licensing board, etc.). Contact them for next steps.
Not Found
Your ATI number was not found. Double-check the number on your receipt. If the issue persists, contact our office — we can verify your submission was sent.

What is an ATI number?

My status shows "Received" — is that normal?
Yes. "Received" means the DOJ has your submission and it is in the processing queue. No action is needed on your part. Check back in a few days.
The portal says my results were sent — what now?
Your requesting agency (employer, licensing board, etc.) has received the results. Contact them directly to confirm receipt and next steps in your application process.
Can I see the actual background check report?
The DOJ Applicant Status portal shows status only, not the full report. To obtain a copy of your own record, you can request a Personal Response through the California DOJ.
